Kurt Sutter has struck again, and this time he means business.
A coherent, uncomplicated story was told on Mayans M.C. Season 1 Episode 9, which led it to be the best episode of Season 1 so far. It started with a bang and ended with a bang, and for the first time since the show premiered, it left me wanting more.
And the fact that the first major death of the series occurred on this episode isn’t even the main reason I enjoyed it so much; although it was a small reason.
That’s right, Mayans M.C. has officially said goodbye to Devante, the man who has been with the Galindo cartel for decades. But Miguel is someone who firmly stands behind the philosophy of out with the old, in with the new.
Devante’s head may have been chopped off, but it was all for the greater good or at least that’s what Adelita would like us all to believe. In fact, as a way to make the partnership a done deal, Adelita was the one who beheaded Devante.

Sometimes loyalty doesn’t pay off, sorry buddy.
The entirety of “Serpiente/Chikchan” was built up to Devante’s demise and it was executed perfectly. Miguel’s sudden cold shoulder to Devante seemed a little out of the blue.
At first, it just seemed like Miguel was over Devante’s old-fashioned ways, but in reality, he found out about Devante’s lie that he forced Dita to tell.
Cristobal Sr. died from pneumonia, not a kidnapping. Mayans M.C. delivered a vital PSA here, don’t lie to the drug cartel leader that you’re working for. It’ll just get you killed.

Miguel and Devante’s final scene together was chilling. Devante accepted his fate well before it happened, and just wanted to make sure Miguel knew he loved his family. Miguel even thanked him before having him killed! These people are sick and twisted.
While Miguel’s new partnership with Adelita didn’t work out too well for Devante, it did seem to work out for the M.C. Galindo held a meeting with all of them including Alvarez and for the first time on the show, all major characters were in the same scene.
Bishop: Prospect, the bikes.
Miguel: I’m okay if Ezekiel stays. It might be useful to have someone remember the details of what we say.
The M.C.’s role in the Galindo cartel will now be much more vital to the organization, but also be more profitable. Bishop and company are on board, and Angel, Coco, and Gilly are over the moon to know Adelita did not rat them out.
At least that’s one secret Angel doesn’t have to worry about anymore, but unfortunately for him, he has another one on his plate.

The annoying Lincoln Potter revealed to Angel that EZ has been lying to him, and has been working undercover as a part of a new deal. The devastation in Angel’s eyes when he learned of this was heartbreaking.
While the major talking point coming out of this episode will probably be Devante’s death, it was actually the Reyes family that made this episode so special.
EZ, Angel, and Felipe were forced to open up to each other and be honest about the secrets and feelings they have been hiding. The scene between Angel and Felipe felt especially raw.
EZ’s betrayal didn’t seem to hurt Angel as much as his father’s betrayal did. There were clearly a lot of lingering issues between the two that had never been addressed before.
Angel wanted answers that Felipe didn’t have. Why was EZ the son Felipe cherished so much more than Angel? The sad part was Felipe couldn’t deny it either, all he could do was assure Angel that he had a special place in his heart too.
Felipe: EZ could live the life he was supposed to have.
Angel: What about me? Do I have the life I’m supposed to have?
Felipe: You chose it. I didn’t like. I never judged you. I never stopped loving you. You were my first born.
Angel: Guess I’m having trouble seeing that.
One thing’s for certain, Angel’s relationship with both his brother and his father won’t be the same. He may have agreed to take Lincoln Potter’s deal and help EZ get a clean record, but he doesn’t want to see EZ in Santo Padre anymore.
It’s sad to see the brotherly bond between the two breaks so easily. Hopefully, Angel will eventually be able to move past EZ’s lies, and they can rebuild the foundation they once had because their bond was the heart of Mayans M.C.
While they may not be on the best of terms, they are going to have to work together because of Potter. The only question is whether they will do what he wants — kill their cousin Jiminez.
I don’t think EZ or Angel have the heart to do that, especially to family. However, Jiminez will probably somehow end up dead because Kurt Sutter never just lets a character walk away so peacefully.

As soon as Jiminez said he was going to be with his family, his death sentence was pretty much signed.
The only question now is who will sign it?
I told you I wouldn’t ask you to do anything you haven’t done before. Killing a member of law enforcement, that should come easy, EZ.
As for Mr. EZ Reyes, Angel isn’t the only person who wants him gone. Emily confronted EZ after learning about his deal from Potter. Mrs. Galindo warned him that if he ever hurts her family and forces her to choose, she won’t choose him.
Despite her threats, there still seemed to be some serious sexual tension. At some point, Emily is going to jump EZ’s bones even if she wants to kill him right now.
There’s no denying their chemistry.
EZ: Need some more papers shredded? I’m getting good at it.
Emily: Maybe I should ask you the same thing. But I guess you don’t need paper, not when you have a beautiful mind.
“Serpiente/Chikchan” was a great episode that left me excited for not only the season finale but Season 2 as well. The war between the Galindo cartel and the rebels has wrapped up in quite an unexpected but impactful way, and EZ’s troubles continue to get more and more intense.
As long as Mayans M.C. Season 1 Episode 10 follows the lead of “Serpiente/Chikchan’s,” Mayans M.C. Season 1 will end in grandiose fashion.
What did you think of “Serpiente/Chikchan”?
Did you see Devante’s death coming?
Do you think EZ and Angel will do what Potters asked and murder Jiminez?
What are you hoping to see on the Season 1 finale?
