Sounds Like Ezra Miller’s The Flash Movie Will Film After Fantastic Beasts

A lot has changed since Warner Bros. set out to start its own universe around DC’s Justice League. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman may have proven to be superpowers at the box office, but the whole team hasn’t stuck around. Ben Affleck will be replaced by Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight with a “noir” new vision in the works from Matt Reeves. Superman and Cyborg appear to be shelved.

When it comes to Ezra Miller’s standalone Flash flick, it looks to be moving forward in development, but it’s ironically going the “slow and steady wins the race” route. The project has run the gamut through a few writers and directors since it was first announced in 2014. Now it looks like Miller’s commitment to Fantastic Beasts will in fact further delay the return of his Flash. According to a new report out of Variety, Miller will get his DC standalone film as soon as he wraps up his work on the Fantastic Beasts series.

Ezra Miller plays a key role in the Harry Potter spinoff film series, and since his character Credence Barebone was revealed to be of an important lineage in the second movie, Crimes of Grindelwald, he’ll likely be tied up by production for some time. Fantastic Beasts 3 is set to begin shooting this fall, after a recent delay, and will be released on November 12, 2021.

This pushes The Flash way back, but considering Warner Bros’ DCEU has a solid two-movies-a-year line-up in 2020 and 2021, this is okay. After Joker hits theaters this October, Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 are coming in 2020, and The Batman and The Suicide Squad will follow in 2021.

In theory, Ezra Miller could walk right off the Fantastic Beasts 3 set and start the The Flash for a 2022 or 2023 release date. (That’s assuming Warner Bros. doesn’t fast-track production on Fantastic Beasts 4, since there are five movies planned in the franchise and we don’t know how many Miller’s Credence is expected to be in.)

It does seem like a long wait for The Flash, adding onto an already lengthy wait, but The Flash is just getting back on track either way. Ezra Miller and Grant Morrison recently took over writing duties from Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who were being tapped to direct the picture as well. The switch-up apparently came about because Daley and Goldstein, who both wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming, had conflicting visions with Miller.

Grant Morrison is an accomplished comic book writer, who has brought a variety of DC stories into animated movies and TV shows such as Batman vs. Robin, Beware the Batman, and All-Star Superman. Ezra Miller has not written a feature film before but has shown his passion to bring the character to life the right way.

Ezra Miller recently teased the movie will introduced the “speedster multiverse” and explore the different realities, characters, and versions of the characters explored in the comics and on The CW television series. Stay tuned here on CinemaBlend as we learn more about The Flash!
