Star Wars Fans Are Complaining About A Possible Spoiler That Just Showed Up In A TV Spot

In the latest TV spot for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Rey (Daisy Ridley) is seen holding something very important. The TV spot that arrived online is titled “Sith Dagger,” but it’s important to note this this comes from a YouTube page called Disneyland Experience, and not Disney or Lucasfilm. So it could be mislabeled. Here it is:

And here’s the screengrab that has the Star Wars community typing furiously online.

It’s a dagger. If the title is to be believed, it’s a Sith Dagger. This seems to sync up to several Star Wars leaks that have made their way online, though the purpose of the Sith Dagger is far from crystal clear.

The prevalent theory is that the blade itself is a Macguffin, or a plot device that seems important but really isn’t. Some believe that there is text on the blade that has to be translated. This, in turn, leads to C-3PO being manipulated so that he can translate this forbidden verbiage. Hence, the red 3PO eyes we saw in earlier videos.

Star Wars fans who watched the Clone Wars also suggest that this dagger might be the stand in for something called The Dagger of Mortis, which might be used as a weapon to kill Palpatine. Or if the coordinates on the blade lead Rey, Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac) and the team to Palpatine, then the “map” may become a weapon. But man, are we in the speculation weeds here.

That didn’t stop fans online from – you guessed it – being pissed off that the blade was shown.

I mean, yeah, it does. A little.

Settle down, Bevis, this is a multi-million dollar Disney franchise picture. I’m sure it will look badass on the big screen. The bigger question at hand is WHY would J.J. Abrams show this in a TV spot? Granted, a lot of fans have agreed to not watch this footage, as we are so close to the end. But this seems like a major reveal… even if it’s a Macguffin.

The answers are waiting for us when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters on December 20. Can you stay offline, and wait?
